Who Are You Standing By...

by Brian McDermott on 02/10/12

No matter who or where we are or what we do, we all need people who will stand with us. This video has more than 39 million views on YouTube. At least a dozen of them are mine. And every time I watch I'm inspired, and come away with some new thought. Today it's, "Who am I standing by?" (5-min fabulous rendition of the song Stand By Me.)

Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy...

by Brian McDermott on 01/30/12

Are things really as bad as so many pundits and politicians paint the picture these days?

I don't think so, and I love this attitude tweak offered by comedian Louis C.K. a while back on the Conan O'Brien show. It's 4 minutes.  (Email subscribers Watch Here or click the headline.)

Note: Thanks to Daniel Pink for the reminder about this video. He refers to it in a Blog about Louis C.K.'s recent paradigm-breaking and major-money-making decision to bypass traditional media outlets to offer his Live at the Beacon Theater video direct to buyers as a $5 download.

Everybody Can Be Somebody...

by Brian McDermott on 01/20/12

Inspired by music? This 2-song performance by Raul Midon at a TEDx event is a beautiful blend of moving lyrics and innovative musicianship. His messages include:

  • Picture a world a world where all the people can feel their worth...
  • Everybody is free to make a little difference in this world...
  • Peace on earth is what we want...
The combination reminded me of this Robert Kennedy quote:

“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total; of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.

I've watched this several times and find it inspiring every time. Also bought some of Midon's music on iTunes and love it. The video is 9 minutes... (Email subscribers Watch Here, or click the headline.)

I Shook the Hand of the Enemy...

by Brian McDermott on 01/07/12

I clicked on this video because of its title -- The Power of Music. I'm sharing it because of the spoken line, "I shook the hand of the enemy."

That's what moved me. It brought to mind personal experiences, and experiences with coaching clients, when needing to be the one with "the right" answer resulted in blame and costly conquest instead of alignment and cooperation. Situations when opportunities were lost because of self-centered opposition. In this war story told by a 90-year-old veteran, a sniper puts down his weapon because of a few notes on a trumpet. The music reminded him of what really mattered in life, which reminded me how much more can be accomplished by building on the goals and beliefs we share in common than you can by simply shooting things down ... even for mortal enemies. Change Your Words...

by Brian McDermott on 12/26/11

A friend shared a fascinating twist on New Year's resolutions. One year he resolved to improve his listening, and to remind himself wrote and circled an "L" at the top of the agenda for every meeting he attended. The next year he focused on empathy. "E' was the reminder. The result? He's better at both.

Words have power, and it pays to choose them thoughtfully. This 2-minute video might inspire your choices about how you live and learn in 2012. Happy New Year. (Email subscribers Watch Here, or click the headline.)

Change a Life, Change the World...

by Brian McDermott on 12/16/11

Sometimes, it doesn't take all that much to make change. A little awareness. A bit of belief in our own capacity to help in some small way. The willingness to act.

This short film begins with a man holding out a tin can and a cardboard sign marked: Change? It ends the same way, but things are different because of what he chooses to do with the few spare coins he collects. Give yourself a 10-minute holiday break to watch this one.

Kudos to the filmaker, Sharon Wright at She's Always Wright Productions, for this compelling short film.

We Are the Economy... Buycott to Make Things Better

by Brian McDermott on 12/02/11

Carrotmob.org is a little idea with big ambitions -- to change the way the world does business. Considering that our economic and political climate is such a mess, the conditions may be perfect for this elegant notion to occupy the minds of people and groups who want to make a difference.

The 9-minute video does an excellent job of showing how the idea works. The brand new Carrotmob website documents success stories about 175 campaigns by people all over the world.

Brent Schulkin, the founder of Carrotmob, explains the idea behind Carrotmob this way in a Blog article he addresses to the Occupy wall Street folks: "We invite businesses to take whatever socially beneficial actions we want. If they agree to do what we want, we reward them by spending money at their business. It’s the opposite of a boycott.

Carrotmob is taking grassroot. Check it out.

If Your Life Were a Book...

by Brian McDermott on 11/29/11

If your life were a book and you were the author, how would you want your story to go?

In this 9-minute TEDx Talk video, Amy Purdy shares the story she wrote for herself after losing her spleen, her kidneys, and both legs below the knee to meningitis at age 19 -- only to become a world champion snowboarder. Her inspiring insight: Borders are blessings that can ignite the imagination. They can stop us, or force us to get creative.

She tells her creative story beautifully...

Can I Buy You a Think?

by Brian McDermott on 11/15/11

In the end, it's a beer commercial. It's funny. But like all good humor it carries some truth. And it triggers some useful questions. How often do I make snap judgments based on appearances, unsubstantiated first impressions, or preconceived notions, if not outright bias and prejudice. What am I missing if my vision is too narrow to see possibilities that aren't immediately obvious?

Before you watch, ask yourself, "What would I do if I walked into a movie theater where only two seats in the absolute center of the theater were vacant, and every other seat were occupied by a bunch of what appear to be intimidating characters?

I'm going to watch this again, and then in honor of the questions, sip a Carlsberg while I give them some thought. Cheers!
