Be the Change...

by Brian McDermott on 11/08/11

What if change could happen spontaneously? What if change could be triggered by the smallest gesture, based only on the belief in not being deterred by obstacles that seem too big to be overcome? What would be possible if we each did whatever we could every day to make the world a little better place?

Two minutes of inspiration...

Less Is More...

by Brian McDermott on 10/31/11

The challenge: Make room for the good stuff...

In the United States, Graham Hill says, we spend $22 billion a year on storing stuff that doesn't fit in our homes, even though we have bigger houses, smaller households, and 3 times as much personal space as the average person did 50 years ago.

This 5-minute video has me thinking:

  • Literally, how much freedom might come from getting rid of the things I no longer need or use?
  • Metaphorically, what might come from letting go of intellectual and emotional things that serve no useful, constructive purpose?

They All Matter...

by Brian McDermott on 10/21/11

A great story, about a simple act, with an important suggestion about the potential to make a difference in other people's lives: Don't wait for some "big moment." Every day offers opportunities to affect people's lives, big and small. They all matter.

This is a 6-minute TED.com video. I'm pretty certain you will laugh... and nod... and probably do...

Coming Home Changed...

by Brian McDermott on 10/17/11

We just passed the 10th anniversary of the start of the U.S. war in Afghanistan, not really the kind of occasion anyone likes to commemorate. In fact, it's pretty easy to ignore what's happening there and in Iraq. It's all so far away from our day-to-day world.

These two 60-second commercials bring it home a bit. Aired some time ago by American Airlines and Budweiser, they are important reminders about the men and women for whom the wars are very real... the men and women following orders, fighting on our behalf, and too often coming home to communities that can't handle the mental health issues created by war or can't provide enough civilian jobs. Let's not forget...

To the Crazy Ones... Think Different

by Brian McDermott on 10/07/11

Listen to the voice and the message. Both are Steve Jobs. It's the kind of thinking and inspiration that will make his legacy long and profoundly influential.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. And he did.

The F Word... Famine is the Real Obscenity

by Brian McDermott on 10/04/11

30,000 children have died in three months, and 12 million men and women are on the brink of survival in the Horn of Africa for lack of food.

Bono and a host of others are encouraging us to add our voices to a petition to teh U.S. Congress encouraging full funding of Feed the Future.

The (Funny) Facts of Life...

by Brian McDermott on 10/02/11

If you had the "birds and the bees talk" with your parents, or with your own child, or if you have one in your future, this video will make you laugh. It's 10 minutes of seeing the world through the eyes and curiosity of an 8 year old...

There's Always a Chance and There's Always a Choice...

by Brian McDermott on 09/22/11

We all have our demons, and we either deal with them or we don't. If we're lucky we get help, and that often begins with giving voice to the need. Chris Rene gave voice to his story in a profile aired as part of his singing audition for the new TV show, The X Factor. Then he gave it voice again through performing a song he composed called, Young Homie. From what I felt, he wrote it by living it a day at a time. It's a voice and a message worth hearing...

Life Is Short...

by Brian McDermott on 09/18/11

Sometimes the only wake-up calls we heed in life come dressed as tragedies. This one comes as a friendly inspiring reminder. It's from Holstee, a company that markets "lifestyle goods, designed with a conscience." This is their Life Manifesto...

Imagine...

by Brian McDermott on 09/05/11

You've heard John Lennon's song Imagine performed many times, but never quite like this. I won't be the only one recommending you watch this 8-minute video. The power of Lennon's hopeful lyrics are amazingly magnified by the context of the performer's story -- and his voice.

Emmanuel Kelly and his brother are Iraqi war orphans, both of whom suffered limb deficiencies as a result of chemical warfare. He's not even sure how old he is, but he knows he can sing. He told the Herald Sun Australian newspaper, "I don't want people to look at it (his performance) and go: 'Wow that is brave.' I want people to look at me and go, 'Wow, he has got a really good voice' or 'Wow, he is going to go far in life,' not, 'Wow, that is brave for him to do that'."

But when he sings, "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one"... you will believe him...  (Email Subscriber Click Here to Watch Online)
